Summer Internship Grants

ÌÒñ«ÉçÇø awards grants to select students participating in unpaid or low-paying summer internships (those with an income equivalent or less than $4,000).

Grants are meant to cover cost-of-living expenses and should not be considered wage replacement. The college offers multiple grants each year, each with unique criteria and qualifications.

Thanks to the generosity of numerous alumni, parents and friends, 70 students received over $230,000 in funding for summer 2023 internships. The application period for summer 2024 grants opens February 1, 2024.

Application

If you have secured or are in the interview process for an unpaid or low-paying internship, you must submit one common application to the Betty and B. Frank Matthews II ’49 Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) through Handshake to be considered for funding.

You will need to designate which grant(s) you would like to be considered for. Applications for the named grants will be evaluated first and, if you are not selected for one of those, you will automatically be considered for the Career Development Summer Internship Grant.

Selection

A committee of Career Development staff members, faculty and/or other staff members will evaluate your application.

The committee makes decisions based on a variety of factors, including the quality of the internship, your learning goals, the living expenses associated with the experience and possibly your academic performance and campus involvement. Each grant has unique requirements; please read the descriptions. You will not be eligible for a grant if you intend to receive academic credit for Explorer 099 or an independent study.

Grants are categorized as non-qualified scholarships. For domestic students, the college will not withhold taxes on the grants or report them on a form-1099. For graduating domestic students, the college will report the grant on a form-1099. Recipients, or their parents/guardians if they are considered dependents, are responsible for reporting the income on their individual taxes. Grants awarded to international students may be subject to tax withholding and will be reviewed on an individual basis. Students receiving financial aid will be required to report the grant as income on their aid application for the subsequent year. Undocumented students and graduating international students are not eligible to receive grants unless they have been granted work authorization by the Department of Homeland Security.
